How to Scan Old Photos Without Glare on iPhone
Glare happens because a glossy print reflects light like a mirror. The fix is to control where that reflection lands, or to take several shots and combine the parts of each that are glare-free.
Why your phone picks up glare
A glossy print bounces light from a lamp, window or ceiling light straight into the lens. Hold the phone directly above the photo and you also catch the reflection of the phone and your hands. Matte prints barely do this; glossy prints from the 1970s to the 2000s are the worst.
1. Move the light, not the photo
Turn off overhead lights and work beside a window with indirect daylight, or with two lamps placed at about 45° on either side of the photo. Light coming in at an angle reflects away from the lens instead of into it.
2. Tilt the phone slightly
If you still see a bright patch, tilt the phone a few degrees until it slides off the image. Many scanner apps then straighten the perspective for you, so the slight angle doesn’t show in the final scan.
3. Don’t scan through glass or plastic
Album sleeves and picture-frame glass add a second reflective layer. Take the photo out if you can do it safely. If it’s stuck to a “magnetic” album page, scan it in place with the light at a steep angle rather than forcing it loose.
4. Use multi-shot glare removal
The most reliable fix is software that combines several shots. Google’s PhotoScan pioneered this. It captures a reference frame plus four more as you move the phone over dots on screen. Because the glare shifts between shots while the photo stays put, it keeps the darkest version of each spot, which is usually the glare-free one (Google Research). PhotoScan is free, but it hasn’t been updated since November 2022.
5. Check before you move on
Zoom in on each scan before you put the original away. Glare often hides in dark areas like hair or suits, where a bright streak is easy to miss at thumbnail size.
Quick checklist
- Overhead lights off, light from the sides
- Photo out of its sleeve or frame
- Phone parallel to the photo, or tilted just enough to lose the glare
- Multi-shot mode for glossy prints
- Zoom in to check each scan
